
Overwhelm is an old toxic friend of mine who rarely comes around anymore. It’s just not welcome in my current reality since I realized it’s absolutely useless to me as any form of a solution to the issue at hand and in fact, just makes everything worse. It took me several years of consciously feeling through emotions around this, regulating my nervous system and revising the stories I was telling in those times of true overwhelm. Each time I would notice a reduction in my old automatic response in favor of the new beliefs and truths I now hold. Over time this created new neural pathways and allows my default response to be the better feeling place I experience now.
At the first signs of busy stress, I'm able to remind myself that even when there is too much to do and not enough time to do it, things do always work out in the end and usually better than can be expected. Time is a construct of the mind and it can be expanded or contracted, I’ve now proven this to myself on many occasions. I can quickly shift and find a sense of peace and ease and trust that it will all be ok. I am open to miracles and so they find me easily and if the worst happens and I drop a ball, that ball was meant to be dropped for the benefit of all and will either lead to an even better outcome, or a chance to love and accept ourselves and feel the love and acceptance of others, even when we are not perfect. For none of us are ever perfect. There is no such thing. So why then do we continue to strive for perfection? We hold ourselves to impossible standards, and what we make it mean about us in our own minds whether we meet them or not, is all that really matters. Think about some of the expectations you have of yourself, and think about how you talk to and treat yourself when those unrealistic expectations are not met. Would you treat your best friend, your child, a loved one, that same way? Or would you extend kindness, compassion and understanding to them no matter what the scenario? Can you find a way to extend those same graces to yourself? These types of habitual thoughts, judgements and mindsets are deep and pervasive in our culture and they make things so stressful and unpleasant when they really don’t need to be that way at all. It doesn't need to take a few years to rewire this for yourself either, if you have the right tools and can see where and when to apply them.
